Which is better, laminate or vinyl flooring?

Our high-quality laminate and vinyl floors are similar – but a little different. First, laminate has a core made from 100% recovered wood, while vinyl’s core layer is phthalate-free PVC and fibreglass. All our laminate and vinyl collections are water-resistant and durable, though laminate is slightly exceptionally resistant to surface wear. Both types are economically priced, with laminate offering more budget options. Our laminate colours vary from dark laminate to light laminate, ranging from white laminate and grey laminate to brown laminate and black laminate, as well as superbly realistic oak laminate, too. Find out more on our laminate vs vinyl flooring page.

Are there different grades of laminate?

Yes, the different grades of laminate floors indicate how durable and hard-wearing they are when installed in different places, such as homes, shops, schools or offices. They’re numbered 31, 32 and 33, with Class 31 suitable for domestic and light commercial use. Almost all Quick-Step laminate floors are Class 32, which means they're really tough when used in home. Our Impressive Ultra range is Class 33, making it even tougher for very busy households. Strong and stylish, all our waterproof laminate flooring can be used in any room, from the bedroom to the living room, the bathroom to the kitchen.

Which thickness of laminate is the best?

Trying to decide what thickness of laminate to buy? Put simply, the thicker the plank, the more durable, stable and comfortable it will be, so the best laminate thickness depends on the room. . Laminate that’s less than 8mm thick is budget friendly and suitable for low-traffic areas such as guest rooms, home offices and storage spaces. Our high-quality 8mm laminate (and up to 10mm laminate) is a versatile choice for any room, offering a good balance between affordability and durability. Finally, 12mm laminate flooring (Class 33) is an ultra-thick option designed for heavy commercial use, making it ideal for very busy households or high-traffic areas.
