When Karlien Stoeykens and Tom Vanderstukken bought their charming house back in 2007, they knew they were at the start of something beautiful. In the spring of 2013, they decided to use black ceramic tiles for the floors in their hallway and modern kitchen, while the other rooms on the ground floor feature Variano Parquet in Royal Grey Oak Oiled. The result? A beautiful symbiosis of two styles in perfect harmony.
From house to home
Professionally, Tom is a product manager at a company that makes and sells bakery ingredients, while Karlien develops inspiring communications on urban renovation projects. They have two children: a 7-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl. Six years after purchasing their home, the couple began renovating the four ground-floor rooms: the hallway, kitchen/dining room, TV area and playroom.
Variano has created the perfect balance. The floor offers the charm of weathered wood, but creates a surprising look.
Cosy family dwelling
Some of the inner walls had to make way. A stylish kitchen now forms the heart of the home. All heating, electricity and sanitary fittings were replaced. In a nutshell, the house with its distinctive look was transformed into a cosy, spacious, light-filled and — above all — comfortable family dwelling they love to call ‘home’.
Maintaining a balance
What’s immediately striking about the home are the contrasts: the long white built-in cabinet wall with black recesses, the use of wood and ceramic tile flooring, modern furniture in the kitchen and second-hand cabinets in the playroom, sober and sleek lines alternating with original elements such as the old doors with glass windows… Yet the design does not clash.
Linking classic and modern
The rooms flow into one another, and the grey-coloured Variano Parquet serves as a beautiful link between classic and modern. “This is an old house with its own style and charm, and we definitely wanted to preserve that”, says Tom. “However, we also wanted a very modern kitchen. Variano has created the perfect balance. These floors offer the charm of weathered hardwood, but create a surprising look through the use of multi-strip planks. Also very important: when there’s a scratch here and there, it’s no big deal, since the floor already features numerous aesthetic dents and scratches.”
